In addition to a complete strip and sand, the wood was also bleached to remove all color. A light stain was then applied, followed by several hand applied coats of wipe-on polyurethane. Prior to bleaching, the old hardware holes were plugged with maple and new holes were drilled for more modern hardware. The well-made chest of drawers is from the early 20th century, and is solid wood throughout.
