While painting my living room, I removed most of the crude mantel trim and painted the rest, knowing that I would make a nice bookcase with a storage cabinet to cover the unused fireplace. These photos show the completed base storage cabinet installed. It features raised panel arched-top doors and a top made of 3/4" plywood with 1/4" thick solid mahogany planks glued down to it. The books that fill the interior will eventually rest upon upper shelves when the top section is completed. Until then, the piece resembles a console or a buffet cabinet. For future consideration, the cabinet can be removed and the fireplace put back into operation. |
