This old trunk was completely gone over with small tools to remove the paper interior, stabilize the wood, and rejuvinate the metal bands. Additionally, many repairs were made to the piece along with replacing portions which had rotted away. An entirely new interior was made of aromatic cedar which also added to the strength and weight of the trunk. A new latch was made as well.
