An old boat hatch was turned into a table top in this project; a leg set was made for the 80-pound (maybe more) maritime behemoth. The corroded iron bands were ground down to bare metal, and were "blackened" (the same way old firearms were). Heavy-duty joinery was needed, so 1/2" x 2" deep mortise and tenons, along with interior corner bracing, and old-time cut nails (for pinning the tenons) were used. The table is so-named, because it was made and delivered just days prior to Thanksgiving Day, and because it looks like the table in the paintings of the "Signing of the Mayflower Compact". |
