A little over a century ago, this cabinet was used by a dentist to hold the small tools and other implements of his profession. Sometime in the mid-twentieth century, it was converted for use as an aircraft mechanic's tool chest at Lockheed. The upper part of the chest was cut-off, the brass drawer label frames were removed from the large drawers, the original roll/tambour front was cut-up and used for the top and back bracing, and the original stand (if any) was replaced with some cobbled-together wood scraps. Add to this decades of heavy use in an aircraft hanger (oily bolts and bits of metal, paint splatters, scrapes, gashes, solvent spills, etc.), followed by several more decades of storage in a damp basement, and you have a real challenge for restoration. After deep-cleaning and massive repairs to the 20-some drawers and cabinet, the old finish was removed carefully with a cabinet card scraper and redone. A new top and leg stand were made to compliment the cabinet (the top and leg stand could actually be a coffee table, as seen in one of the shop photos). Other features include a hand-carved walnut inlay with the client's monogram and felt-lined drawers.
