1948 Chest of Drawers-Refinished & Repaired |

This chest of drawers was made during the early "Baby-Boom" years just after World War II. In order to meet the huge demand of inexpensive furniture to fill equally inexpensive new houses, quality was sacrificed on the altar of Producton, as exemplified in this piece. Because the chest of drawers had simply been nailed together over 50 years ago, it was literally coming apart at the seams when delivered to the shop. Most joints had to be glued together so the piece wouldn't collapse during the refinshing process. After several days of repeated applications of chemical stripper, the white paint was finally gone. Then, 19th century cabinet scrapers were used to remove the old factory finish and to smooth the wood surface. Many hand-applied coats of varnish and a good rubbing with paste wax finished the transformation. |
